ISPRS WG VIII/1 "Human Settlements and Impact Analysis" 2004-2008 Call for Participation and First Circular Letter Urban environments are characterized by highly dynamic changes in biophysical and socio-economic domains, and management of urban environments involves procedures of mapping and monitoring which require reliable information base and robust analytical technologies. Remote sensing and GIS, given their cost-effectiveness and technological soundness, are increasingly being used for development of useful source of information and for decision making in support of a wide array of urban applications.
Our
workgroup focuses on geographic information applications in urban and
suburban environments, on promoting the
goals of the WG as expressed in its terms of reference by means of various
activities and events and in co-operation with ISPRS, other national and
international organisations and Geomatics-related firms.
We invite interested people to join the WG and share
their experience and knowledge with other colleagues.
We also advise you to have a look at our WEB page at
There detailed information, updates and news and many useful links and information are provided. We aim at making our WEB site the major Internet information source on Human Settlements and Impact Analysis. You are kindly invited to participate in the activities of this WG. If you want to join the WG please send back to the WG director/co-director or Secretary the enclosed questionnaire, which you can also fill-out and send electronically from our WEB site. Please feel free to pass this information to the colleagues who may be interested in the WG.
We are looking forward to welcome you in our WG.
Yours sincerely, Derya Maktav, Carsten Jürgens, Peter Winkler |

Venue Berlin:Metropolis of Science and Culture The 1st EARSeL SIG URS workshop will be held at the Erwin-Schrödinger Centre in Berlin-Adlershof. The “City of Science, Technology and Media“, as Berlin-Adlershof is also called, is Berlin’s largest science and technology campus and its biggest media location. Twelve non-university research institutes and six natural science faculties of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin create a unique network, including more than 370 high tech companies. Beyond science - Germany’s capital Berlin is by far the largest city in Germany. With a great number of historical and political places of interest, Berlin can also be seen as a “cultural capital”. Locations like the Potsdamer Platz, Checkpoint Charlie, or the Brandenburg Gate have seen a thrilling history - being converted from symbols of a divided city into central locations of a vivid city landscape. More than 160 museums invite you to enjoy the world of arts, history and technology. Every night the curtain is raised in three opera houses and more than 50 theatres.
