Urban Remote
Sensing
Urban environments are characterized by highly dynamic changes in
biophysical and socio-economic domains, and management of urban
environments involves procedures of mapping and monitoring which
require reliable information base and robust analytical
technologies. Remote sensing and GIS, given their cost-effectiveness
and technological soundness, are increasingly being used for
development of useful source of information and for decision making
in support of a wide array of urban applications. This Special
Interest Group (SIG) focusses on GI applications in urban and
suburban environments and invites interested people to join the SIG
and share their experience and knowledge with others.
One of
the major activities was the First International Symposium REMOTE
SENSING OF URBAN AREAS that was initiated 1997 (Regensburg/Germany) and continued annually
from 2001 (Regensburg/Germany) to 2003 (Istanbul/Turkey). In 14-16 March 2005 the symposium continued in Tempe, Arizona (USA):
3rd International Symposium Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban
Areas (URBAN 2005) and 5th International Symposium Remote Sensing of
Urban Areas (URS 2005).
First Workshop of the EARSeL-SIG Urban Remote Sensing: Urban Remote
Sensing, Challenges and Solutions, 2-3 March 2006 in Berlin/Germany.
The activities will continue:
- 1) URBAN & URS 2007: URBAN
REMOTE SENSING JOINT EVENT 2007.
- Paris, France, 11-13 April
2007.
