Tenth Young Geotechnical Engineers' Conference - Izmir
21st - 24th October, 1996

Introduction

Tenth Young Geotechnical Engineers' Conference will be organized in Turkey. The theme of the Conference is Ground Improvement". The conference will be held in Izmir between 21st and 25th October, 1996. The participants are expected to arrive in Izmir by the evening of Sunday 20th October. The Conference will be residential at "Altin Yunus" (Golden Dolphin) Hotel on the Aegean coast.

Young engineers from every European Member Society are invited to participate. The object of the Conference is to provide an opportunity for young geotechnical engineers and scientists to meet and present their ideas and discuss their achievements and results of their investigations.

Presentations

Participants are invited to make a presentation of 10 minutes duration on any topic within geotechnical engineering which falls into the general context of the title "Ground Improvement". Participants are invited to address this theme by discussing in their presentations the measure they have taken to assure themselves that their work is of the highest quality within the resources available.

Those reporting field work, or case histories could discuss difficulties of achieving high quality data and the checks on instrumentation that have been carried out. Participants should also discuss the value of their work in the context of the technical and economic benefit that it provides.

Format

The Conference will be informal in nature, with up to 30 young engineers from as many European countries as possible. Each participant is expected to present his work during 10 minutes, and allow 10 minutes time for discussions, as shown in draft program.

In order to help in organizing the Conference participants are requested to send the title of their presentations, plus an abstract, to the Conference Secretariat before 1st September, 1996. Each participant is also requested to prepare an extended summary of his or her presentation, of two type written pages maximum, and bring 40 copies of the summary to the Conference for distribution. Abstracts in Ms Word or HTML format can be sent to below email address.

A small number of senior geotechnical engineers will be invited to give short talks, to chair and stimulate the discussions during sessions, and to share their experience with the younger colleagues.

Nomination of Participants

Each European Member Society of the ISSMFE is invited to nominate one or two participants. A reserve candidate may also be selected who may be invited to attend the meeting if the number permits. Participants should preferably be selected both from research institutions and industry. As a tradition of YGEC the age of participants should not exceed 35 years.

Member Societies are asked to send their nominations to the Secretariat of the Conference before 1st August, 1996. Participants will then be invited by the Organizing Committee, and will receive detailed information on the logistics of the meeting and on the presentation of papers.

Conference Costs

The cost of the Conference is 750 DM, including registration and administrative costs, proceeding, and meals and accommodation at Altin Yunus Hotel from Sunday evening to midday Friday (including dinner of Sunday but not lunch on Friday). A cheque of a bankers order for the Conference costs should be sent to the Secretary of YGEC as soon as possible and in any case before 1st September, 1996.

Secretariat
